Our regular workshops at OA will be suspended through the holiday season and begin again in early January. Save up some energy and enthusiasm over the break so we can get to work restoring bikes in the new year!
Common Cycle is now accepting bicycle donations to restore over the winter at our OA workshops. These bikes will be given a new life as commuters around Ann Arbor, either sold as a CC fundraiser or used in a pilot bike sharing program! They’ll also be great project for novice mechanics who wish to hone their skills in the off-season. Donations will be handled through the Jackson Rd location of Two Wheel Tango; please call them at 734.769.8401 if you are interested in donating a bike. Thanks to Jimmy and Dennis at TWT for their support!
We’re partnering with Nancy Shore and getDowntown to get you all geared up for winter bike commuting. The workshops are this week Wednesday (5:30-6:30pm) and Thursday (12-1pm) at 301 E. Liberty.
Registration for the workshops is now closed, but getDowntown has a lot of great winter commuting (bike and other) resources you can find in their Conquering the Cold section.
With our course at Outdoor Adventures and the Mobile Repair Stand packed away until next spring, we’ll be running open workshops at Outdoor Adventures (336 Hill St) on Wednesday nights from 7-9:30 p.m. It runs the same way as in Kerrytown: stop by if you need help, stop by if you want to help.
The first one starts tomorrow, November 2nd. As always, feel free to join the google group for more info about these workshops and other volunteering opportunities.
See you there!
Your favorite Common Cycle mechanics will be teaching a bike maintenance class this fall! The class starts next wednesday, Sept. 14, at 6 PM (so sign up now!–scroll down to “bike clinic”) and is a collaboration with UM’s Outdoor Adventures Program. The 5-week series will go something like this:
9/14: Basic care, cleaning, and maintenance
9/21: wheels, tires, tubes, and intro to hubs
9/28: Hubs, Bottom Brackets, and Headsets
10/5: Brakes and Derailleurs
10/12: Cranks/chainrings, Handlebars, stems, shifters, levers
There is a fee: $5 per class, or $20 for the whole shebang, but that money will go towards snacks and beverages for an optional post-or-mid-series bike ride (or other activity, depending on weather and folks’ preferences).
Whether you’ve been working on bikes for a while and want to freshen up, or if you’re just starting to get your hands greasy, or if you think (rightly so) that Eric, Sam, Sandy, Ben, and Molly are super cool and you want to learn everything they know…come on out!
Hope to see you next wednesday!
Hi everyone! We’ve been making some progress on getting the many
bikes at EMU up and running, and it’s a great opportunity to practice
your skills. We will be holding another workshop at EMU this Sunday,
April 10th at 3 p.m. The goal will be to get the bikes we started on
last week into ready to ride condition. Email Heather if you’d like to
sign up, or if you’d be willing to help teach.
Sorry for the late notice! We have an additional workshop this THURSDAY (the day before Friday, as duly noted by Ms. Black) at 6:30pm at Outdoor Adventures (336 Hill St). My (Eric’s) plan is to cover hub adjustment, wheel truing, and brake alignment, but of course we’ll adjust the material based upon the number of people who show up and their interests. No RSVP needed, but if you know you are coming you can help me keep track of numbers by emailing me here. The workshop is free and you need not bring anything except a bike or wheel if you like. We probably won’t be able to get to everyone’s bikes, but we can probably make it through a dozen or so wheels.
After a small rest we’ve got another workshop at EMU scheduled for Sunday March 27 at 3pm! It is free, open to the public, and we invite tinkerers of all skill levels. Space is limited, so if you would like to attend please email Heather to sign up. As usual, if you don’t email fast enough to get in we will save you a spot at the front of the line for a future workshop!
With a successful first winter workshop under our belt, it’s time to announce tons more! First up, winter workshop #2 is confirmed for Jan 30th. It’s currently full, but you can email eric@commoncycle.org to get on the wait list in case anyone drops out, or to sign up for workshop #3 on February 13th. Also, if you haven’t joined our email list yet, navigate over here to get on it!
You’ll also be able to find us at the winter ReSkilling Festival on February 5th, where we’ll be talking about winter commuting, gear, and maintenance.
But wait, there’s more! We’re pleased to announce a budding partnership with UM’s Outdoor Adventures, with the first of many workshops scheduled for March 31st.
We’re able to announce all this excitement because of the hard work of our wonderful volunteers- if you love bikes and want to help us offer up even more fun, please let us know! We love students and teachers of all ages- kids get your parents to bring you to our events, and parents don’t think twice about hauling the family along!
Our workshop filled up fast, but you can still email to get on the wait list for Jan 9th. If you didn’t get in on this one and you want to be first in line for the next workshop (tentatively Jan 30th) send an email to Eric at eric@commoncycle.org!
