Maintenance Course Syllabus
Our 4-week maintenance courses are offered in spring (March to April) and fall (October to November).
Week 1: Get to Know Your Bike & Fix-a-Flat
- Overview of the parts of a bicycle frame
- Inspection, diagnosis, and triage
- Chain maintenance
- Fix-a-flat
- Tubed vs tubeless tires & respective benefits
Week 2: Cables Systems I: Derailleurs & Shifting
- Introduction to major systems – cable and bearing
- What is a derailleur? (Primary/secondary jobs)
- Fine-tuning shifting
- Derailleur position (common / cable adjustments – coarse & fine)
- Setup problems (uncommon)
- Shifter types
Week 3: Cables Systems II: Brakes
- Common features of all braking systems + nomenclature
- Overview 3-4 most common brake types
- Routine adjustments and when to adjust
- Disc brakes overview
- Cable systems summary
- Cable/housing system: Why use both?
Week 4: Wheel Truing & Open-Practice
- Wheel and tire sizes (nominal sizes vs. ISO / BSD)
- Wheel-truing
- Open practice
