Maintenance Course Syllabus

Our 4-week maintenance courses are offered in spring (March to April) and fall (October to November).

Week 1: Get to Know Your Bike & Fix-a-Flat

  • Overview of the parts of a bicycle frame
  • Inspection, diagnosis, and triage
  • Chain maintenance
  • Fix-a-flat
  • Tubed vs tubeless tires & respective benefits

Week 2: Cables Systems I: Derailleurs & Shifting

  • Introduction to major systems – cable and bearing
  • What is a derailleur? (Primary/secondary jobs)
  • Fine-tuning shifting
  • Derailleur position (common / cable adjustments – coarse & fine)
  • Setup problems (uncommon)
  • Shifter types

Week 3: Cables Systems II: Brakes

  • Common features of all braking systems + nomenclature
  • Overview 3-4 most common brake types
  • Routine adjustments and when to adjust
  • Disc brakes overview
  • Cable systems summary
  • Cable/housing system: Why use both?

Week 4: Wheel Truing & Open-Practice

  • Wheel and tire sizes (nominal sizes vs. ISO / BSD)
  • Wheel-truing
  • Open practice
